Is there any hope to avoid fusion surgery?

I had fusion of L456 in my lower back and then had pain for 1.5 years after that down my right leg. Then, all of a sudden last December that stopped and seemed to move to my neck. Pain down right arm and shoulder with tingling fingers. So... neck traction, medications, and now in the process of pain block shots. Pain is reduced but it gets worse still at night and hand tingles whenever I tilt my head back. Is this something to live with and not take a chance on surgery? Can I ski, kayak, ride a bike, etc.? I'm worried about a fall or tilting my head up to ride a bike, etc. I've missed doing my outdoor activities now for nearly two years... Any comments appreciated!

Just so you know, there is not a L6 in most people's spines...Do you mean S1? I am fused at C4/5, 5/6, and 6/7. What surgery has been offered to you and by whom? I have a 360 fusion and have no regrets, but will never be able to go skiing, kayaking or ride a bike. I could not ride a bike because of the fusion in my lumbar spine. I doubt that you would want to take a chance with falling though with a cervical fusion. Why do you think you need surgery? Surgery is not recommended for just pain. Usually, surgery is only warranted if you have nerve damage, loss of sensation, etc. Have you had an MRI, discogram, myleogram done? What were the results of those tests? What have your doctors recommended?
